On Matters of Taboo?
In our conception, it is often taboo if someone enquired about some common questions such as what is the purpose of life, why humans are born as male and female, what happens after the present life, and so on. Although there may be not a single answer, it is still important to ask and also seek possible solutions without draining the mind. These are very common inquiries especially, at the time one suffers a loss of a loved one or develops deep challenges in the workplace, and often wants to find solace.
Before I begin any of this conversation, I need to let You know that the speaker is not a materialist, a philosopher, nor impersonal entity, or a mental speculator. Our universe is the body of the Supreme Entity, whom we call God, this is known as the Virata Rupa. The revealed scriptures (the Vedas in general) talk about this Supreme Entity in great detail, and the Shrimad Bhagavatham, also known as the Bhagavatha Purana, explains that the trees are the hairs on the body of the Lord. The living entities (including us) are the part and parcels of this Supreme Person. So understand that if you are worried about the loss of a relative or friend or spouse, do understand that it is the supreme person who gives them the lending hand. One should consider the so-called 'death' as a change of dress by the living entity. This is described by the Supreme Lord itself, in the most celebrated instructions from the Lord Himself, the Bhagavad Gita. The Lord explains the science of the soul, which is the actual identity of the living entity. The bodily dress is just a covering a gift of mother nature. The instructions are given to Arjuna, a devotee of the Lord, who is faced with a dilemma on whether to fight a battle with his blood relatives. The dialogue reveals the nature of the living entity and the relationship maintained with the Supreme Person. Shree Krishna, who reveals himself as the Supreme Bhagavan, reveals the duty of the warrior and encourages Arjuna to fight just by remembering him in the background.
We are in this material atmosphere, because of our propensity to enjoy matter. Our thoughts, words, and actions are all contaminated by material propensities, which basically demand independent enjoyment. Actually, our position is subordinate to that of the Supreme Lord, and we are His eternal servants. Arjuna asks the Lord to reveal His universal form, which is armed with various weapons, several ornaments, and several hands. Seeing this Arjuna is bewildered and requests the Lord to show the two-handed form of Krishna. In this conversation, Arjuna touches upon several questions deeply connected with the science of the soul and approach toward self-realization. The key problems asked by Arjuna are the following:
- What is the nature of the soul and consciousness?
- What happens to the soul after death? Is there rebirth?
- How is the living entity conditioned by the modes of material nature?
- How to return to Godhead, the eternal residence of the Lord?
