An Unexpected Gift
Loka samastha sukhino bhavanthu
Every living being seeks pleasure, some do it pursuing hobbies other through knowledge and some others through service. Few years ago I too was pursuing some pleasure from a fellow colleague who came into my life in a strange way. Being the youngest member in my family, I always was treated as a small kid. And being in the nuclear family setup, I always wished if I had a sister. I always was curious about the relationship between a brother and sister, because I had only very obscure memories of being with my cousin sisters. This time I was pursuing my PhD degree and the colleague mentioned above was one of my labmates. I had a liking for this sisterly character. To have a sister is very fortunate, because you have the experience of being with your mother. In the Indian culture a lot of importance is being given to brother sister relationship; and this is exemplified by the festival of rakshabandhan.
A standout incident which etched this sisterly feeling was when I was there in a conference in Bangalore. One day I was on a weekly fast and the same day I was to leave for Mumbai. Since I had to attend the conference, I left my bag in a friend's room which was near the venue of the conference. Knowing that I had been on a fast, my colleague fetched the bag and even placed in the taxi while I was leaving for the airport. It filled my heart more than anything. Where in Earth can you see a colleague of yours concerned about your well being so affectionately. This sisterly affection was truly a blessing for me, who has always longed to have a sister. Some days the memory of this incident had made me think that there are good people around even in this age. The selfless action has motivated me also to see people differently.
I wished I could treat everyone with this sisterly affection and reciprocate to the love in the hearts of the Goddesses on Earth. Let me be able to understand you and protect your dignity and dreams. Let all mothers and sisters live a safe life and let them be looked after well. I wish all readers a Happy Rakshabandhan.
